Have you ever heard of lyrical dance? Do you know what it is? This is a question we commonly get from parents that are choosing which classes to enroll their dancer in. Other frequently asked questions would be, “What is the difference between lyrical and contemporary or ballet?" "Is lyrical a style that my dancer would enjoy?” Lyrical has been a popular newcomer to the range of dance styles being used around the country. Use this article to help you determine if Lyrical is right for your dancer!
What is Lyrical?
Lyrical is a combination of ballet and jazz dance that often uses lyrics in music to inspire the movements of the dancer. The music inspires expression of strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics of the song. It is a very precise dance with the dancer’s movements portraying the emotion and story of the song. Lyrical concentrates on an individual approach to and expressiveness of emotions such as love, joy, hurt, or anger. Movements in this style attempt to show the meaning of the music.
How is Lyrical Different?
Lyrical and Contemporary dance are very similar because both styles use techniques from ballet and jazz genres. Contemporary also has roots in the modern genre. Contemporary has a strong technical element and most of the movement focuses on speed, strength, and changes of direction. This style is about pushing the boundaries of interpretation. Lyrical is different because it focuses on expression and visual storytelling. The audience’s emotional connection plays a significant role in lyrical dances. In contemporary the movements are more powerful and hard-hitting, whereas, in lyrical, the movements flow smoothly.
How is Lyrical Helpful?
Lyrical can be a great introductory class for new dancers because it instills a sense of enjoyment by simply moving to the music. The style builds grace and balance and helps with fluid movements that are a big part of lyrical. Dancers have freedom to express themselves in the soft movements of the style while engaging and connecting with the audience through emotions. Because dancers are offered more freedom in their movements, they are able to move fluidly and with more gracefulness than they would when performing a stricter style of dance. The moves become intricate and highly technical in their application with the proper body alignment and placement, but not with the same demands as other styles require. Lyrical is a great outlet for your dancer to dance through their emotions and express how they are feeling.
